Right revolution, wrong revolutionary

I’m sure many of you will have seen the video above (from the smart folks at Socialnomics). I like it a lot.

But you know what? We’re too focused on the revolution and not on the revolutionaries.

The hype is a fad. Especially the marketing hype. We’re (well, a lot of us, anyway) all still excited about the technological whiz-bangery and the opportunity to make money.

Me? I’m with Clay Shirky on this – the technology gets interesting when it gets boring. At that point, we can start focussing on what we’re doing and with who. What we can create. Who we can make something great with. How we can actually change the world for the better.

At the moment, it seems most of the buzz is about what we’re doing, with what and how it’s going to make us all so much money. Wrong focus.

    I commented on this video over at Lee Hopkins’ blog. I do like Lee’s work, but I find this video as annoying as sixteen farts in an elevator. It strikes me as very poor communication

    Mostly it’s numbers. But instead of presenting those numbers in ways which are easy to compare and comprehend, they’re in English sentences which you have to read. They’re presented so quickly that there’s no time to comprehend each one before the next appears — from a random direction in a random style, so you can’t prepare your eye for its appearance.

    The music is a cliché.

    The music-while-text-flips-across-screen is a cliché.

    What on earth is wrong with a voiceover? What on earth is wrong with presenting numbers in ways which can be compared? Has no-one ever heard of Edward Tufte?

    Yes, it’s breathtaking — because it leaves you no time to breathe and consider. The emotional response might be “Wow!”, but the real result is confusion. It’s just a propaganda piece. The Relentless Barrage Of Big Numbers (RBBN) scrambles your head before delivering the final “Are you ready?”, leaving you suitably softened up to accept whatever the speaker tells you.

    I’ve seen a few too many of these videos now and I hate them I hate them I hate them I hate them I hate them.

    I love this video. Yes, it’s pretty basic and doesn’t go into the how yet it clearly highlights facts. Where people are hanging out online right now..and that’s powerful in itself. It’s no fad, social media is here and now we have the opportunity to make it worth our while. It’s not all about money…it’s about relationships, trust..when you have THAT then you have a strong support network talking/referring your brand to others. It’s exactly the way business was done 40 years ago yet online. We need to be reactional in this space. Use what’s available, and when the next thing that comes along takes over then use that. Social Media is a powerful tool for business, if used correctly with a strategy and a person who gives a shit about people working behind it. It’s our strongest and most powerful marketing platform yet! It’s about people..and people are the power! Well…that’s my 2 cents 😉
